Our Story
Hand-built in the 50’s by my father, MN artist and Grand Marais Art Colony co-founder Byron Bradley, this charming cabin is located right on the shore of Lake Superior, far closer than you can legally build today.
Hand-built in the 50’s by my father, MN artist and Grand Marais Art Colony co-founder Byron Bradley, this charming cabin is located right on the shore of Lake Superior, far closer than you can legally build today.
Dominated by an imposing stone fireplace and fresco along the living room wall, this cabin was originally Byron’s studio and summer retreat. Marriage (to Emma) and children (Lydia and me, Sarah) led to the need for a large deck and then an addition of another bedroom and new studio space in the 70s.
Today this rustic cabin boasts a sweet little kitchen with the highest quality cookware (Emma was the goddess of Williams Sonoma when it was located in downtown Minneapolis), a comfy double bed in the compact master bedroom, and a single bed in the old bedroom and another in the new studio area. An awesome deck that goes out almost to the water’s edge (over it when the waves are big enough), a covered, screened-in porch that runs the length of the cabin, and a propane fireplace complete the wonderful ambiance that is our Spirit Haven.
Our cabin did not get a telephone until the late 70s, and it still does not have a tv, though there is a WiFi connection for your use. The cabin does have a nice stereo and CD player and a wall of speakers with great reception to MPR via Houghton MI. It also has abundant light for reading. The bathroom is a 3/4 bath; there is a charcoal grill outside. There is a good sized hill to drive down to our parking area (sport cars with low clearance might have difficulty making it down the hill) and the walking path to the cabin from the parking area is on another, gentler hill. Those who need a walker or similar assistance to get around may have difficulty getting to the cabin, as well as negotiating the stairs both inside and outside the cabin. We allow pets at Spirit Haven, but there is a pet fee and they must be confined to their crate if you leave them at the cabin while you are away.
For those with concerns about their health and that of the planet, we strive to be as green as we can be. Your water comes from our well which serves the main house and is completely untreated and delicious. Cleaning products are chemical-free and all our paper products are made from recycled paper. We recycle all we possibly can and respectfully request that you help us in that endeavor.
We are located about 1.5 miles from the town of Grand Marais and there is hiking and biking right outside the cabin door. As the section of Hwy 61 to town is fairly level and has wide shoulders, walking or biking to town is easily accomplished. Book your peaceful vacation retreat now.
